Rabbits have a reputation for being "easy, low-maintenance pets," which honestly does them a disservice — they're social, intelligent animals with specific needs that surprise a lot of first-time owners. Here's what actually matters before bringing one home.
They Need More Space Than Most Starter Cages Provide
Many commercially sold "rabbit cages" are sized more for storage convenience than for the animal. Rabbits need enough room to take at least 3 full hops in one direction and stand fully upright on their hind legs without their ears touching the top. For most breeds, that means a much larger enclosure than the standard small pet store cage — plus daily supervised time outside the enclosure to run.
Hay Is the Diet, Not a Snack
This surprises a lot of new owners: unlimited fresh hay should make up the majority of a rabbit's diet, not pellets. Hay supports constant dental wear (a rabbit's teeth never stop growing) and healthy digestion. Pellets and fresh vegetables are supplements to the hay, not the main event.
Litter Training Actually Works
Rabbits can be litter trained fairly reliably, especially once spayed or neutered, which also reduces territorial marking behavior. A litter box with hay placed right in or next to it (rabbits often eat while they use the bathroom) tends to work well.
Most Rabbits Don't Enjoy Being Picked Up
This is a common source of frustration for new owners, especially in households with kids. Rabbits are prey animals, and being lifted off the ground can feel like a predator attack to them, even from someone they trust. Most rabbits bond better through floor-level interaction — sitting near them, letting them approach, offering treats by hand — rather than frequent carrying.
They Do Better With Rabbit Company
Rabbits are highly social and, in many cases, genuinely thrive better with a bonded rabbit companion than living alone — something dog and cat owners don't always expect. Bonding two rabbits takes a careful, gradual process (not just placing them together), so this is worth researching separately if you're considering a pair.
Lifespan Is Longer Than People Expect
A healthy, well-cared-for house rabbit can live 8-12 years — closer to a cat's commitment than a hamster's. It's worth going in with that timeline in mind rather than treating a rabbit as a short-term starter pet.
Rabbit-Proofing Matters
Rabbits chew, and chewing on electrical cords is a genuine safety hazard for both the rabbit and your home. Cord covers, blocking access to cables, and knowing which houseplants are toxic to rabbits are worth sorting out before your rabbit has free roam of a room.
